The other day I walked under the awning of the pizza place a couple of doors down. And I looked up. And I saw this.
It gave me a start.

I think this must be the kind of situation for which pith helmets were designed - critters drop from the jungle canopy (or the commercial awning - same difference, right?), can't get a grip on the helmet, slide harmlessly to the ground where they can be dispatched by your ever vigilant pet mongoose.
DON'T tell me you forgot to take your mongoose with you on this expedition??..... Uh oh!
You know, ever since we were shown a cartoon adaptation of Rikki Tikki Tavi in school, the very word "mongoose" has given me the creeps. It's such a strong association that I was completely baffled just now to discover that the mongoose is the HERO of Rikki Tikki Tavi. I had forgotten the cobras entirely. All I could remember was a house surrounded by evil mongooses. Which did not happen. At all.
The only explanation I can think of is that I confused Rikki Tikki Tavi with the stoats, weasels, and ferrets from The Wind in the Willows, another cartoon adaptation that also gives me the creeps.
Cartoon adaptations have a lot to answer for. That or my viewing comprehension was not so hot as a child.
P.S. I would like to lodge a formal complaint against whoever wrote Tikki Tikki Tembo because the similarity of name is very confusing and Rudyard Kipling got there first.
There are only two possible messages. The first is an automatic response to the second and the second is an automatic response to the first. The first is, "Here I am, here I am, here I am." The second is, "So glad you are, so glad you are, so glad you are." (Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan)
