This is what I've been drinking with my tea!

Grit!

This came out of my kettle. After I saw it, I cleaned the kettle out, and boy was it dirty in there! I can understand mineral buildup, but what is this grit? It's not like I've been brewing nasty things in my witch's cauldron, I just boil water in my kettle. Weird.

Upon further inspection (with a flashlight) I have come to the unsurprising conclusion that the grit IS mineral buildup. I have just never seen it in loose flake form before. It is not an improvement.

Well - on the plus side, I suppose it helps to boost your calcium intake!

You could put a dilute vinegar solution in the kettle and boil it for a few minutes, then dump it all out and rinse well.

The acetic acid in the vinegar will help to dissolve the mineral buildup. Might need a couple of rounds of this treatment to get it really clean.

Ooh, that's very helpful, thank you!

As I used to see at the Monsanto Carousel of Progress in Disneyland:

Better living through chemistry!

1. That is an excellent motto.

2. "Monsanto Carousel of Progress" has a strangely pleasant ring to it in spite of being completely incongruous. Unless it's a real carousel. Which I assume it isn't. Although if it were, I would ride it.
